For those of you who are not familiar with the Miami area, here is some general information about Miami & Dade County Miami is a unique destination where visitors can have it all - beautiful beaches, pristine nature and the excitement of a big city. One get a feeling of being in the tropics, surrounded by coconut palms, royal palms, sea grape trees, and sweet scent of jasmine in the air after dark. Miami is comprised of a network of barrier islands, coral rock and mangrove swamps, connected by manmade bridges. To the south and west, Everglades National Park provides a 1.5 million acre play area for outdoor enthusiasts. Biscayne National Park features living coral reefs, colorful sea life and plants. Miami Beach has a rich history as a trend setting arts center, from the world famous nightclubs of the 50’s, to the rich cultural life of today’s modern South Beach. The City of Miami Beach has an identity that is intrinsically linked to the arts, and today our entertainment, production and arts communities are stronger than ever. Coral Gables, one of the nations first planned developments, was built almost entirely out of the coral limestone quarried there. The quarry itself was turned into Venetian Pool, an exotic swimming hole with romantic stone bridges and waterfalls. Gracious Spanish colonial-style homes line twisty streets vegetated lushly and sequestered aesthetically from the big-city world. Key Biscayne holds popular tourist attractions, busy recreational marinas and fantastic beaches. Windsurfing and sailing are foremost along its windy causeway, known as Hobie Beach. Miami Seaquarium is here and holds a dolphin show and environmentally friendly exhibits. Nearby marinas and harbors offer everything from boat rentals to diving excursions. There are more ways to play at Crandon Park, a huge beach park with amusement rides, tennis and bike paths. At the islands southern tip, a state park protects a historic lighthouse and the beach that fronts it. Another of Miamis oldest neighborhoods, Coconut Grove has an excellent shopping and nightlife scene. Visit a Gilded Age Italian-style palace at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens and one of the states oldest science museums, which is next door but slated to move downtown in coming years. South Beach’s Art Deco District, located at the southern end of Miami Beach, is home to more than 800 architecturally protected buildings from the 1930s and 1940s.
